Is it too early for mulled wine?
Well usually I would say yes but this year is so off balance that we all need a win. Because of this, I have started Christmas early and put up the tree with a hearty mug of the spiced beverage in hand.
I will, at least once each year, buy a cup of mulled wine from the busy Christmas markets but nothing beats this homemade recipe. Too often, I have bought a cup of mulled wine from a stall that is 50% orange juice which can leave me feeling a little cheated. That's not to say that you can't get a really satisfying cup of mulled wine. Although, even when finding the best stuff, there's still nothing better than filling the home with the rich spiced aroma of homemade mulled wine.
There are, no doubt, thousands of recipes to choose from but I present to you a delicious unique twist to the traditional beverage that will leave you wanting to drink the entire pot for yourself!
Health fact: red wine is known to contain a number of antioxidants, similar to the ones found in dark chocolate. However, unlike most of the advice surrounding antioxidants, red wine should be consumed in moderation. So I'm not saying you should down a bottle of red wine (definitely not) but there is a lot of respected research suggesting one glass of red wine a day could be beneficial.
Mulled wine
Preparation time
5 minutes
Cook time
7-10 minutes
Serves
3-4 people
750ml of your favourite red wine
75ml spiced rum (3 shots)
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cinnamon stick
8 whole cloves
1/4 tsp ground ginger
4 tbsp granulated sugar
200ml orange juice
Place all the ingredients into a saucepan and place on a low heat. As it just begins to simmer remove from the heat and sieve into some large mugs.
Wonderfully simple and heart-warming. The vanilla adds another level to this drink and the rum will warm the cockles of the heart.
